Send and Email to the City: COVID-19 is an Income Crisis

Housing providers and residents across the city are working together to find solutions to deal with the big losses in income many residents will face because of job loss and dislocation caused by the response to COVID-19. What the City of Seattle needs to focus on today is not expanding eviction bans but supporting residents having trouble paying rent and working with providers facing challenges with their mortgages and costs. We need to work together to solve this crisis. You can see our letter to the Council and Mayor here.

Greetings Mayor and Councilmember,

As a housing provider I want to express my concern about proposed legislation to extend and expand the recent moratorium on evictions. Apparently you are planning to vote on this Monday, May 4th. Please vote no or don't consider this legislation. I'm not worried about evicting anybody; I am deeply worried about the deep and wide loss of income created by the response to COVID-19. My residents are my customers and often people I've come to know and care about. They need help. Passage of this proposal signals to them to not pay rent and pay other pressing obligations. However, rent must still be paid, and a large balance of rent isn't going to help my residents. What they need is assistance in paying their essential expenses. I appreciate the efforts of groups like Artist Trust that are providing assistance. I also will likely need help. If rent isn't paid, I have financial obligations on my buildings including debt service, taxes, and operating costs. If I lose even a percentage of rent revenue I can't make those payments. Please consider a comprehensive approach, not simply a ban on evictions. We're all in this crisis together. Let's work together to solve it.
