Let Bans Expire or Allow Evictions for Non-Payers

On June 4th statewide and local eviction bans expire. Let them. But if officials want them to continue, housing providers need to be able to evict people who are using the bans as a reason to hold back rent. It’s time for changes. Let the Governor and Mayor of Seattle know what you think now.

Dear Governor Inslee and Mayor Durkan,

As a housing provider in the state of Washington I have a simple request. First, let the eviction bans imposed months ago expire on June 4th. We have told you again and again that what is most urgent to help our residents is help with income, not eviction bans. Second, if you decide to extend these bans, you must allow us to pursue residents who have income and are not paying rent, including commercial tenants. As delinquencies grow we will see smaller housing providers lose their homes, their businesses, and many others will have to lay off staff and reduce operations. This means more unemployment. Finally, rent pays property taxes. When you encourage people to not pay rent, in the end you are putting a big hole in future property tax revenue when housing providers can no longer pay property taxes. Seattle For Growth has sent you a detailed explanation of this problem. Please read that and work with housing providers to solve income problems rather than encouraging people to hold back on paying rent. Thank you for your consideration.
