Governor Inslee: Let the Ban Expire and Offer Real Rent Relief

This is pretty simple. When you shut down the economy people lose jobs and then they can’t pay rent. Eviction bans don’t put money in people’s pockets. Rent relief can if it makes sense and is efficient. Governor Inslee,

I am writing you today as a housing provider and asking you to let your eviction ban expire on October 15 and offer people real help paying rent. All over the state of Washington people have lost jobs and income because of your decision to stop the spread of Covid-19 by shutting down the economy. While this may have been the right decision for public health, the lost income has meant many people can't pay rent. What people needed in March and what they need today is help paying rent, not bans on eviction. What your eviction ban has done is force people to make tough choices; pay the rent or use the money for other needs. Why are you continuing this policy? People need income not eviction bans! Please do the following: * End the eviction ban -- No housing provider including myself wants to evict anyone ever. Eviction is expensive and a last resort. But some people aren't paying even though they have money. We need you to allow us to evict those people. We think they'll pay. * Require proof of Covid-19 impact -- If someone is hurting we offer help. But your order doesn't require proof of impact or evidence that residents are looking for help themselves. If you extend your eviction ban, we need to see some evidence of impact. * People need real help -- Your rent relief program is too narrow offering help only to people who fit a very specific set of criteria. Just help people without any requirements other than Covid-19 impact and allow housing providers to apply for the help, not just tenants. It's time to lead, Governor. It's time to make decisions not just renew your order because it is easy. People are suffering and they need your help. They need money, not programs, paperwork, and waiting lists. Send help now.
